All of the power at God’s disposal is under the authority of the Word that
proceeds from His mouth. What He does is
governed by what He declares. His Word
initiates His work. It is the Word of
the Lord that creates and sets in motion the things that He will do. This is why so often we miss what God is
doing - we are seeking His hand when we should be hearing what He says. By watching for His hand, we cannot help but
misinterpret what we see because we do not have the proper context of His
initiating Word.
Disregarding God’s mouth and, instead, desperately praying for Him to
move reminds me of a daily occurrence at our house. Our two pugs receive their dinner every
evening at 5pm. This has been the case
since they were puppies six years ago, and it rarely varies. And yet, also invariably, around 3:00 or
3:30pm they will approach one of us and begin
pawing at our hands and feet, groaning, whimpering, rolling their eyes and trying
to exercise mind-control over us by looking for all intents as if we have
forgotten to feed them for days! I’ve
discovered that whispering to dogs isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Or maybe I’m just not whispering the right
thing. . .
At any rate, the agreed upon arrangement has always been that we will
see to their nutritional needs at the appropriate times throughout the
day. Indeed we have kept up our end of
the deal and yet, strangely enough, two hours before dinnertime every day they
come together in conspired force seeking to “move our hand” of provision. It seems that our word just isn’t good enough
for them.
Are we any different at times?
We become anxious and worried about our lives, wondering what we will
eat, what we will drink, what we will wear; all the while not remembering that
God’s Word has declared our “Heavenly Father knows that we need all these
things.” We become discontented, fretful
and stressed over the uncertainties of life, forgetting the Word that instructs:
“cast all your anxiety on Him, because He
cares for you.” Occasionally we may
find ourselves disconcerted at the thought that our lives might end up being
insignificant and of no eternal consequence, missing completely God’s promises
that: “He who began a good work in you
will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” and “Faithful is He who calls you, and He also
will bring it to pass.”
And here is the real issue: we tend to treat God’s Word like our own words;
something uttered in a moment in time and space that may or may not have any
bearing on people, things or events as they unfold later on in time and
space. We know that our words can become
invalid, influenced, irrelevant, distorted, diminished, expedited, complicated
by the circumstances native to the natural realm in which we live. Words can change their import or even their
core meaning over time. We’ve come to
understand words as subjective, relative and dependent upon context and
conditions.
But God’s Word could not be more different than our words. In the very moment when God speaks forth a
Word from His mouth, a living thing is
created - something alive with the very Life of God is initiated and set in
motion. In Isaiah 48, God gives us
insight into the nature of His Word. He
says in verse 3, “I declared the former
things long ago and they went forth from My mouth. . .” Again He says in verse 6, “I proclaim to you new things from this
time, even hidden things which you have not known.” Then in verse 7 He says, “They are created now.
. .” (emphasis added)- this is the same word that is used in Genesis 1:1
when God created the heavens and the
earth.
When God speaks, the living thing created is eternal: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my
words will never pass away.” When
God speaks, the living thing created is eternally purposeful and successful: “So will My word be which goes forth from My
mouth; It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and
without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.”
When God speaks, the living thing created is
energized: “For the word of God is living
and active.” When God speaks, the living
thing created is life-sustaining: “Man
lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.” When God speaks, the living thing created is
life-changing: “All Scripture is
God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in
righteousness.” When God speaks, it
is “The Word of His power!”
