When God speaks, a living thing is created and set in motion. And once His word has been released in time
and space, there certainly will be a “suddenly” when He is going to act and it
will come to pass! However, in the
“time” that intervenes between His speaking and His suddenly, there are a
number of other significant activities relative to His word which also take place. In order for us to be postured properly for His
word to find full expression in us, we need to understand and actively engage
in these other, intervening aspects of “the word of His power.”
One of these important aspects of God’s word, which largely escapes our
notice on a regular basis, is the dynamic of its sustaining power. The Bible
teaches us that the Lord Jesus Christ “upholds
all things by the word of His power.”
This means that everything which is created (no exceptions) exists
solely by His Word. Paul states it this
way: “in Him we live and move and exist
(or have our being)” and “in Him all
things hold together.”
The word of God is all around us, whether we choose to acknowledge it
or not. We can be looking right at it
and not even see it. We can be listening
to the sound of it and not even hear it.
We can experience the nearness of it and not even feel it. And yet, all of the created order around us
radiates, resounds and responds to God’s word.
The universe unfolds and expands at the speed of light by His word. Protons, neutrons and electrons revolve
wildly under the control of His word.
Birds find food for their young and animals give birth in the forest
with no other explanation or enablement than the sustaining word of God.
The next heartbeat, the next breath, the next word about to roll-off
the tongue are all known by God before they ever occur, because they exist by
the word of His power. This is
astonishing when we consider that the curses shouted at the foot of the cross were
uttered by tongues sustained by God’s word.
The hands that roughly pounded the nails existed by the word of God. The sin-infected lives of every man, woman
and child ever to walk the earth, and the reason why Christ was crucified, are
held together by the sustaining word of God!
“He
causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the
righteous and the unrighteous.” It is
almost impossible for us to grasp this truth. The God of the universe maintains it, upholds
it and sustains it by His own word,
knowing full well that man will continue to “suppress the truth” in their
unrighteousness. While His word sustains
and guarantees our existence, man continues to deny His. This is part of what it means to “acknowledge
Him in all our ways.” Embracing His word
involves the perpetual recognition that our entire being and existence is
wholly dependent upon “the word of His power.”
