Up until this point in our discussion of God’s Word, what has proceeded
from His mouth has been known only to God and not by man. When God speaks, it is at the counsel of His own will and the determination of His own purpose. A created,
living thing is initiated and set in motion; it sustains everything to which it pertains; and there will
come a “suddenly” moment when
He will act upon what He has spoken.
But so far, all of this is known only to God. For "No
eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for
those who love him." And “No one
knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.” However, “God has revealed it to us by his
Spirit. The Spirit searches all
things, even the deep things of God.” (1 Cor. 2:9-11 emphasis added).
At some point, determined by God Himself, there will come a moment - between
the speaking of a Word and the sudden doing of that word - where He will reveal His word to His people. This revealing (uncovering or disclosing)
takes place in the manner of His choosing - either directly to the
individual(s) involved, or indirectly through one of His messengers (angel,
prophet, spokesman, writing, dream, vision, etc . . .). Consider the following:
- “See, the former things have taken place, and new things I
declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you." (Isaiah
42:9 emphasis added)
- “Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing (lit. “no word”) without revealing his plan to his servants
the prophets.” (Amos 3:7 emphasis added)
- 'Call to me and I will
answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not
know.' (Jeremiah 33:3 emphasis added)
- "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth;
for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He
will speak; and He will disclose to
you what is to come.” (John 16:13 emphasis added)
And not only does God promise to reveal His word to us, He obligates
Himself to ensure that His Word will be performed exactly as He discloses
it. The Lord identifies Himself as the
One “confirming the word of His servant and
performing the purpose of His messengers.” (Is. 44:26)
This truth about God revealing His Word to us is extremely critical to
understand; in fact, it is the very foundation for spiritual vision. Without revelation, there would be no
possibility of vision. Any vision apart
from revelation is merely man-inspired, naturally-derived and temporal in
nature. To be destiny-fulfilling,
Divinely-purposed, life-changing and eternally significant, vision must exceed
every dimension in the natural realm. Spiritual
vision cannot be cognitively deduced, empirically discovered, systematically
taught, naturally evolved or even accidentally stumbled upon. Vision can only be received through
revelation.
Surprisingly, we tend to look for our vision and inspiration everywhere
else we can think of first. We are prone
to phone a friend, do feasibility studies, explore what has worked for someone
else, rely upon market research and analysis, weigh the pros and the cons,
consult with popular consensus or just be plain old “happy-go-lucky.”
But if we desire our course to be established perfectly, we must accept
the invitation to stand in the “council of the Lord, to see and hear His word.” If we want our way to be productive and
successful from eternity’s perspective, we must choose to live “by everything that proceeds out of the
mouth of the Lord.” If we want our
lives to be tethered to reality, we must receive His revelation and vision for us.
“Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live.” (Is. 55:3)
